The Grand Boobie In The Sky

The Grand Boobie In The Sky

Long ago, on a rocky island surrounded by the sea, there lived a young
blue-footed booby named Polluk.
Polluk had only recently become an adult.
Like all young boobies, he loved to fish.
Unlike the others, however, Polluk was curious.
While the older boobies watched only the sea, Polluk often found himself
looking elsewhere.
Sometimes he watched the clouds.
Sometimes he watched the stars that appeared before dawn.
Sometimes he simply wondered what might exist beyond the endless ocean.
The older boobies laughed.
“Fish are in the water,” they would tell him.
“There is nothing in the sky worth looking at.”
Polluk only smiled.
He continued looking.
One bright morning, Polluk noticed something shining high above him.
It was far too distant to understand.
At first, it looked no larger than a tiny white speck.
He blinked.
Slowly…
The shape began to change.
It became the outline of a beautiful fish.
Polluk stared in amazement.
Then he heard a voice.
“I am Iruk.”
The young booby looked around.
No one else seemed to notice.
“I come from an island very far from here.”
Polluk could not see anyone.
“I will show you where the best catches are.”
Day after day Iruk taught him.
He did not tell Polluk where fish were.
He taught him how to find them.
“Watch the sea.”
Polluk watched.
“When tiny fish gather into great shimmering baitballs…”
Polluk watched.
“When dolphins suddenly change direction…”
He watched.
“When other birds begin circling…”
He watched.
“When the ocean itself begins to move…”
He watched.
Soon Polluk could read the sea as easily as other birds read the wind.
He always seemed to know where the finest catches would be.
The older boobies shook their heads.
“He’s just lucky.”
Polluk smiled.
He never argued.
Then one day, the mountain awakened.
Fire burst into the sky.
Ash drifted over the island.
The sea changed.
The familiar signs disappeared.
The old ways no longer worked.
Polluk begged the older boobies.
“Come with me.”
“I know what to watch.”
But they trusted only what they had always known.
Many grew weak.
Many never recovered.
Polluk mourned them all.
The young boobies gathered around Polluk.
He taught them everything Iruk had taught him.
He showed them the changing sea.
The hidden signs.
The language of birds.
The dance of fish.
The wisdom carried by the ocean itself.
The young boobies listened.
They survived.
As they grew older, they taught their own young.
One evening, Iruk spoke again.
“The time for my return to my island is at hand.”
Polluk lowered his head.
“I shall miss you.”
“Do not mourn me.”
Polluk listened quietly.
“Be the best booby you can be.”
Polluk wanted to ask where Iruk truly came from.
He wanted to ask why Iruk had chosen him.
He wanted to ask many things.
But somehow…
he knew it was enough.
When he looked up once more…
The shining shape had disappeared.
Iruk had gone.
The truth was larger than Polluk could understand, and Iruk knew no words
could explain it.
So he simply left Polluk with the gift that mattered most.
Many generations have passed since then.
The youngsters became adults.
The adults became teachers.
The story was told again…
and again…
and again.
Even today, if you watch a colony of blue-footed boobies, you may see many
of them lifting their beaks toward the sky at the same time.
Some people think they are simply looking around.
The boobies know better.
They are remembering Polluk.
They are remembering Iruk.
And perhaps…
just perhaps…
They are waiting for the day when the Grand Booby from the Sky returns once
more.
